Van Cleef was contracted by Morris County for the replacement of an existing deteriorated 16.8 foot span rolled steel I-beam girder bridge with corrugated metal decking, founded on a combination of original stone masonry abutments and concrete widening on the downstream end. The new structure is a 16.75 foot span by 30.25 foot wide precast concrete 3-sided frame, founded on a concrete substructure. The new roadway width is 26.91 foot wide with a NJDOT Standard 4-bar Tube Railing across the bridge. The project included approximately 100 Linear Feet of approach roadway construction. Approach guide rail and end terminals were installed at all four corners to meet current standards, since none were present on the existing structure.
Project included topographic survey, alternatives analysis (for preferred alignment and structure type with cost considerations), geotechnical engineering design, roadway and bridge design, obtaining NJDEP Flood Hazard Area and Freshwater Wetlands permits, detour plan, coordination with Township Officials, preparation of cost and quantity estimates, specifications, coordination with utilities, ROW and Easement acquisition, Working Drawing review and addressing contractors RFI’s. Work included coordination with SHPO and Historic Consultant to determine what effect the project may have on the possible remains of a nearby forge shown on a map dating from 1853. Coordination with Township Fire Department officials for restoration of a truck pull-off area adjacent to the bridge for drawing water for local fire protection needs was included as part of the project.
