Van Cleef was contracted by the County of Monmouth to provide design and construction support services for the replacement of Bridge A-44 on County Route 537 (Colts Neck Road) over Slope Brook. The structure was a deteriorated single cell brick arch, and was replaced with a single cell precast concrete box culvert with a clear span of 8’ on reinforced cast-in-place concrete spread footings. The bridge was widened in its current location to accommodate 8’ shoulders in both eastbound and westbound directions. Project elements included topographic surveys, right-of-way mapping, horizontal and vertical geometric design, bridge design, foundation design, stormwater management design, guide rail design, acquisition of NJDEP Flood Hazard and Wetlands permits, cultural resources investigations, as well as relocations of transmission and distribution gas mains, utility poles, and fiber optic facilities.
Traffic was accommodated by splitting construction into two-stages. The first stage consisted of an accelerated construction schedule with road closure, in which the existing structure was demolished and the proposed structure partially constructed. The second stage involved opening the roadway to two-way traffic while constructing the remaining portion of the proposed structure on either side of the roadway.
