Van Cleef was tasked by the Borough of Seaside Heights with designing a shoreline stabilization solution to mitigate the erosion occurring at the parking lot adjacent to the Dock Outfitter’s building. The work included survey, permitting, design, and construction inspection and contract administration. Van Cleef coordinated with their environmental subconsultant, a landscape architect, and the Borough to achieve the desired design and adequately meet permitting requirements.
Van Cleef sought out to design a solution that would be classified as a hybrid shoreline structure which would include both hard elements and vegetation. The “joint planted revetment” approach was selected – a rock revetment with vegetation planted throughout. The intention was to attenuate the waves reaching the shoreline through the structural elements, while also creating ecological uplift and strengthening the soil through the vegetation planted within the rocks and upland of the revetment. With these elements working together, the expectation is that erosion will be reduced at this location, preserving both the parking lot and the upland infrastructure.
