The Township of Mount Olive contracted Van Cleef to provide surveying and engineering services to design a unique trail for the visually impaired along the towpath of the historic Morris Canal Greenway from Plane Street in Stanhope to Continental Drive in Mount Olive.
The trail was expanded an additional two miles to connect with the Sussex Branch Trail. The Braille Trail provides guide ropes to safely follow the trail as well as exhibits in Braille for the visually impaired. Enhancements include improvements to the Plane Street Bridge and improving the Houdaille Road Bridge for pedestrian access.
The Borough of Stanhope and the Township of Mount Olive each received $15,000 in National Recreation Trail Grants from the National Park Service to enhance the trail. Complementing this project, Givaudan Fragrances provided $30,000 to resurface the one-mile section of the Morris Canal Greenway to be ADA accessible and to install the wayside exhibits in braille. The trail is enhanced with benches, above-ground planters, and interpretive kiosks.
The services provided by Van Cleef included plans for the regrading of several portions of the pathway to meet ASDA Standards and providing site plans and construction details as part of the grant application.
