Van Cleef was contracted by the West Windsor-Plainsboro Regional School District to provide design services related to the construction of a fully inclusive 5,705-square-foot sensory playground facility. This playground will serve the school’s special needs students of all abilities and reinforces the district’s commitment to every child’s right to play, learn and thrive.
As part of Van Cleef’s contract, design services included topographic survey, site and playground design, permitting, as well as construction administration. To meet all governing laws and requirements, approvals were obtained from the Plainsboro Township Planning Board and the Freehold Soil Conservation District.
The project is an exterior site project consisting of alterations to an existing paved surface adjacent to the Elementary School. Work included the reconstruction of the existing asphalt play area to make way for a new poured in place, energy-absorbing rubber safety surface. The semi-pervious playground surface was constructed with a full depth stone subbase and perforated underdrain system to capture stormwater from the playground area and convey it into the school’s existing stormwater system.
New playground components were installed on concrete foundations beneath the safety surface material and meet all the appropriate fall zone spacing.
Ancillary work included fencing, site amenities and barrier-free ADA access to the improved site area.
