Van Cleef, as a subconsultant to ATANE, was contracted to perform the biennial NBIS inspection of Major Bridge Nos. 84.24N and 84.24S for the New Jersey Turnpike Authority. Bridge Nos. 84.24N&S carries the Turnpike’s SNI/SNO and NSI/NSO Roadways over the Mile 84 U-Turn and the Raritan River and both are comprised of a steel Girder-Floorbeam-Stringer (NSTM) superstructure. Both structures are 5-spans and approximately 812’ long, with two separate, two-girder and floorbeam systems and cantilever bracket floorbeams. Access normally requires the use of UB-60 underbridge unit or bucket (lift) boats, however access for this project used the Contractor-installed temporary deck platform.
Work included routine the NBE inspection, NSTM inspection, detailed mag particle testing and documentation of steel girder cracks, nocturnal navigational lighting inspections, review of ongoing steel repairs and reporting of additional findings, and development of inspection reports thru NJTA’s web-based AssetWise program. Work also included incorporation of underwater inspection findings, clearance/sounding sketches, several Category A/Priority conditions, and development of inspection reports thru NJTA’s web-based AssetWise program.
