Van Cleef was contracted by the Delaware River Joint Toll Bridge Commission to provide design services for the rehabilitation of the bridge carrying Interstate I-80 over the Delaware River. The bridge is a twin 2,400’ long structure. The rehabilitation of the bridge includes the repainting of the superstructure steel, replacement of the existing deck joints, jacking and replacement of the existing bearings. Replacement of these bearings resulted in the first instance of girder jacking under active traffic lanes for any structure maintained by the DRJTBC. Work was advanced concurrent with a separate Delaware River Joint Toll Bridge Commission contract to construct ORT/Express E-ZPass Improvements, which necessitated close coordination of lane shifts and closures throughout the duration of work.
Work effort included: Structural inspection of the existing structure to determine design scope, design of the bearing replacements and jacking requirements; replacement of deck joints; deck sealing with methacrylate; development of painting requirements; traffic engineering for detailed maintenance and protection of traffic plans; utility coordination; roadway design for River Road; topographic survey; drainage system design.
Construction of the Toll Bridge Rehabilitation was completed within both budget and schedule.
