Van Cleef was contacted to review an emergency condition discovered by NJTA Maintenance near MP 138.4 along the Garden State Parkway right shoulder. A sinkhole formed in the right shoulder embankment and the adjacent roadway barrier had rotated and settled. Van Cleef was immediately requested to provide a field inspection and develop repairs.​

Van Cleef engineers immediately pulled as-built plans, reviewed conditions and mobilized for a Maintenance installed closing of the right shoulder in the evening. A follow up inspection was performed in the next morning by our inspection crew.​

The cause of the erosion was determined to be a broken 15” CMP pipe and a deteriorated inlet. Repairs were also made to the settled barrier to stabilize the settlement and other maintenance repairs were specified such as flowable backfill, replacement of the entire CMP pipe to the outfall, and new casting/grate and concrete collar for the inlet. The existing fiber optic cables, exposed by the heavy erosion, were to remain in place.​

Repair plans were developed for implementation by NJTA Maintenance and an on-call Contractor (Mount Construction) within 24 hours of the field visit.
