Van Cleef was contracted by the County of Ocean to provide design services for the replacement of the Thompson Bridge over Toms River. The original structure was a single span, prestressed slab beam with asphalt wearing surface on timber bulkhead abutments. The existing structure had experience considerable scour both in the channel and along the abutments, primarily due to Hurricane Irene, and had received emergency repairs as a result. The proposed structure is a single span three-sided rigid frame with a clear span of 22’-4” on reinforced cast-in-place concrete pile footings. The bridge was reconstructed on its current alignment. Traffic was accommodated utilizing a Full Detour.
Work effort included structural design of the proposed bridge and wingwalls; roadway design including alignment and profile; foundation design; signing and striping plans; utility coordination and accommodation; topographic survey and right-of-way engineering; preparation of NJDEP permit applications for Freshwater Wetlands General Permit and Flood Hazard Area Individual Permit.
