Hamburg Turnpike Corridor Improvements

Van Cleef was contracted by the County of Passaic to design a variety of roadway and bridge improvements along approximately 1 mile of the Hamburg Turnpike corridor, including design of the following: corridor widening to increase capacity and improve Levels of Service; concrete median barrier to separate eastbound and westbound traffic to improve safety; drainage system upgrades to eliminate flooding on the roadway; driveway connection upgrades to improve access to local businesses and residences; sidewalk systems to improve pedestrian connectivity and provide ADA compliance; pavement rehabilitation to improve driver comfort and rideability.

Work included replacement of the mainline bridge, just east of Valley Road (CR 681), to accommodate the wider corridor and sidewalks on both sides, as well as numerous underground utilities supported by the bridge; replacement of the traffic signals at the intersections of Hamburg Turnpike & Valley Road (CR 681) and Hamburg Turnpike & Hinchman Avenue to current standards, including new turning lanes, new lighting, and new crosswalks with ADA compliance to improve accessibility and pedestrian connectivity; approach widening along the Valley Road (CR 681) and Hinchman Avenue approaches to Hamburg Turnpike; accommodations for bus stop shelters to encourage transit ridership; bicycle compatible outside lanes to encourage alternative modes of transportation; relocation of numerous existing overhead and underground utilities; sanitary sewer and water main infrastructure upgrades; compliance with NJDEP Permitting requirements for impacts to Wetlands, Flood Hazard, and Stormwater Management, as well as for the installation of new water and sanitary sewer mains; comprehensive construction staging and sequencing to account for all construction activity, including utility relocations/installations and roadway/bridge construction, while safely and efficiently maintaining traffic and pedestrians throughout construction; numerous Right-of-Way acquisitions and easements to accommodate the improved corridor.
