As part of the revitalization of the Borough of Carteret and its shorelines, the Mayor requested an inspection, evaluation, and recommendations for the repair or replacement of an existing 540-foot-long deteriorated timber pile bent pier within the Arthur Kill. The pier is estimated to have been built in the 1920s and was originally used as a loading dock with crane rails for large vessels unloading shipments to the industrial areas along the Arthur Kill.
As a result of Van Cleef’s inspection, supplemented by an underwater inspection, it was determined that a rehabilitation and conversion to a pedestrian pier was feasible.
Rehabilitation work included the design for a complete redecking with new timber planks, design checks for the existing timber pile caps and stringers to accommodate pedestrian and emergency vehicle loading, resulting in new supplemental stringers, and various timber pile and bracing repairs. Design work also included the replacement of a timber bulkhead with a steel sheet pile bulkhead with tiebacks in less than desirable soil conditions.
The project also included the oversight during construction for the pier rehabilitation by a Van Cleef Construction Inspector, along with shop drawing and construction consultation services.
