Van Cleef was contracted by the County of Monmouth to provide design services for operational and safety improvements at the intersection of CR 20 (Broad Street/South Street) and Main Street in the downtown Manasquan. This intersection has opposing offset side street approaches, which had resulted in difficult vehicular traffic and pedestrian maneuvers through the intersection.

The proposed design included the removal of narrow concrete islands in the middle of the roadways to ease restricted vehicular turning movements. The design included the evaluation of vehicle turning movements to confirm the necessary radii at the various intersection corners. Additional improvements included the reconstruction of the brick paver sidewalks, and installation of ADA compliant curb ramps and crosswalks, in order to improve pedestrian accessibility and safety at this critical downtown location. We designed intersection bulb-outs to enhance traffic calming, and improve the mid-block school route crossing located just east of CR 20 (Broad Street). At this location, the design incorporated the use of Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacons (RRFBs) to enhance the presence of the mid-block pedestrian crossing.

Existing drainage facilities within the intersection were also reconstructed and upgraded to improve stormwater runoff accommodations. Due to the intrusive nature of the curb ramp and drainage construction activity within the intersection, the design accounted for numerous pedestrian diversion routes, and vehicular detour routes to be implemented during construction. The project was designed per Monmouth County, NJDOT, and MUTCD design standards. Extensive Community Outreach was required, including coordination with local residents, businesses, and local officials.
